Women in technology:
myth or reality?

On the eve of International Women's Day, let's talk about the role of women in one of the most progressive spheres - the sphere of information technology.
How many women work in IT? What positions do they aspire to? How attractive is the world of IT technology for the fair sex? IT recruiters help sort out the issue.

World statistics

Every year, Stackoverflow collects and visualizes data from the world of the IT industry. According to statistics collected, the percentage of women employed in the IT field is extremely low. In 2015, it was 5.8%, in 2018 - 6.9%. Let's see why the percentage of working women in the IT sphere occupies systematically low positions.

Unveiling the myths of gender stereotypes

The main reason for the low percentage of women in the IT area lies in the imposed stereotypes that have nothing to do with reality. Because of the existing ideas about the IT sphere, the girls themselves refuse to go into this field. We have identified three main stereotypes that exist in the world of information technology:
1
IT is a purely "male" sphere
There are many misconceptions about the image of an IT specialist. This is necessarily a man, preferably with a beard, uncommunicative, wears glasses. Of course, this is nothing more than a myth. As in any other profession, in the IT sphere, people have a completely different type and ply of the character.
2
IT is extremely difficult for women to make it into IT
IT industry is currently the most progressive area in which there are no gender preferences. Virtually no employer pays attention to the gender, age or appearance of the candidate. In the IT world, only professional skills are important.
3
Women are not inclined to technical work
There is indeed a gender imbalance in universities. However, the reason lies not in the inability of girls to get a foot in the door, but in the prejudices imposed by society. Psychologists have proven that women and men are equally capable of learning technical professions.
By the way, 80% of developers master the profession on their own. Everyone can become an IT specialist if he wants.

Lucky Hunter Practice

For more than a year, Lucky Hunter recruiters have conducted interviews with more than a thousand IT specialists. More than a hundred of them subsequently have landed a job. Among them were both young female specialists, and experienced male professionals. We will not provide statistics, precisely because the gender of the candidate does not matter in IT.
Note: the most popular professions among girls are: layout designer, web designer, manual tester, an analyst. Guys are more involved in administration, automated testing, programming.
We do not claim to be the world's foremost authority, perhaps in other agencies the situation is different, but our example shows that women in the IT world are only welcome.
Interestingly, in rare cases, customers want to hire a girl as a new employee for one simple reason: they just want to "dilute" the men's team. Of course, when choosing an employee, professional skills still play a key role, but this example will serve as proof of equal opportunities for women in the IT world.
Happy holiday, ladies! Do not be afraid to make a shot at one of the most developing and progressive spheres. You will succeed.
